She is such a pleasure to work with, she's not afraid to move and try new expressions and as a person she has such a warm and fun presence on set. Such a fun day, such an amazing shoot!

I've been shooting like crazy and will be posting

a lot of stuff over the next week or so.

This is a beauty series I shot a few weeks ago,

Hair and makeup by Bethany Ruck,

and model Hilary Cruz of Ford Models.

Fun fact, Hilary was the 2007 Miss Teen USA! (Couldn't help mentioning it)

Anyway she was so nice and we had a lot of fun.

My goal is to have a full beauty portfolio by the end of the year,

Last week I had a great shoot with Nicole Valentine, she is an amazing hair and makeup artist and we've been wanting to collaborate for a long time! A designer I am completely in love with was kind enough to provide the pieces for the shoot, her name is Esther Jean and you should all know who she is! Her work is simply stunning. This series marks the beginning of my beauty portfolio, something I've been wanting to start for a while.

Okay, finally going to catch up on my blogging over the next few days! First up is a fashion story I shot a few weeks ago with the stunning, the amazing, the one and only Tiffany Blake! I love her (and who could ever not?). Seriously. Everyone should be trying to work with this woman. She brings it.

Really excited to get this story published! I'm going home to Utah on Tuesday until the 11th, and my only projects will be submitting all my work for publication, and building my new website. And possibly testing with the Wilhelmina agency in Salt Lake City and shooting a senior portrait session or two and writing a song on the piano.

I never rest.

I'm still here! Break week has been great, I intentionally kept it wide open so I could be spontaneous in my activities, and also re-learn how to be okay with relaxing (thanks a lot Brooks, for conditioning me to feel guilty about relaxing)

Slowly I've been moving my things down to my new place in LA, I am so excited to explore the city of madness and live with my best friends. Two years of having my own apartment has made the thought of having someone right next door to give me feedback such a foreign and awesome concept!

Some other highlights of the break are things like the spontaneous trip to San Diego with my roommate Bridger Clements last weekend, and also our nights out trying to figure out how to enjoy the Hollywood night life (it's harder than you'd think..) and also going out dancing here in Santa Barbara with various friends.

In other exciting news, I've been contacted by a local wedding gown designer to shoot her new line this Friday, which I am so excited about! I've been searching for access to wedding dresses to expand my wedding portfolio, and it's just really funny what life hands me sometimes. I have some very good ideas and concept boards for this shoot, I'm really really excited for it.

Also, my portfolio review and imminent graduation are swiftly approaching, so I've spent a good slice of my break designing and choosing where to print my promos, business cards, mini business cards, and of course my portfolio. I've developed a design scheme of "black & bone" which I'm very excited about and feel is very me, and I can't wait to get all my goods in the mail! The official orders are being placed this week :)

And so it is in both excitement and sadness that I begin my very last week of being a Santa Barbara resident. I feel so blessed to have lived here for nearly three years! What an incredible place to know, I'm excited to see what LA has in store for me.

Also to avoid making this entire post all about my silly existence, here are a few of my favorite images from a shoot I did nearly a month ago for a group that contacted me because they liked my work, and asked if I would be interested in shooting a renaissance-themed series for them. The content itself is pretty different from what I usually shoot, so I accepted just to see if I was able to stay true to my style within a concept that is different from what I typically do. I was pretty happy with the results! It makes me feel like I have developed an actual "vision" when I can take a situation that's different than what I normally do and still make it look like I did it. There's a very slim chance anyone has actually read this post all the way through, but if you have, thanks and goodnight.

Cosmetic Hard Light

Assignment Objective: To create an image selling a specific cosmetic, photographed using only harsh, specular light sources. My product was Max Factor's "X-treme Volume Mascara" (thus the X in the background). I love how this came out so much!

Big thank you to Lunabella Makeup Art for doing the hair/m.u., Rory Grebil for assisting, and Erika Pintard for being my fabulous model. This was her first time modeling ever!

Editorial Fashion

Here's my pride and joy of the session, my editorial series for my fashion class! I put a ton of work into this little beauty, I even styled the entire shoot myself! The waist piece in shot #2 and the entire dress in shot #4 were both made by yours truly :)

CD Revolution

This week in Advanced Photoshop class we had an assignment due, a 5 image series that demonstrates the manipulation of color and texture to achieve a more interesting image. Part of that assignment was to print and display the series in a unique and creative way.

What I came up with, was to use old CD cases to create a tile effect with large 15x17 prints on watercolor paper. Since CD cases are completely un-recycleable, this is also a really great way to help do your part in going green! There are so many possibilities with CD cover display, you could make a huge mural of individual photos, or do what I did and make big prints look even more interesting! Give it a try, we all have old CD's lying around :)

These are my five images, at the end is a picture of one of my prints in the tile format.

The images look a little intense this small and close together, but if you click on them you'll see them much bigger and more beautiful :)

Here's a sample of the series I've been working on for Advanced Photoshop, the assignment due tomorrow tasks us with using the manipulation of color and layering of textures to achieve a more interesting photo. For the assignment we have to turn in a cohesive series of five images printed and presented in a different way. I'm pretty stoked on how I'm gonna display them, I'll post pics of the final product tomorrow.

It's not enough to soak yourself in gasoline,

you've got to light yourself on fire.

Back from my job in New Mexico, brimming with renewed determination to make my mark on the world. Last week was AMAZING! Got to spend a week on set in White Sands, New Mexico with Jim Jordan and an absolutely incredible team, shooting the new ad campaign for TSL jewelry's GORGEOUS new line. Couture gowns, millions of dollars in diamonds, beautiful models, white wolves, and a 1930's German sidecar motorcycle are just a few words to describe how awesome this shoot was. Due to legal contracts, I can't post pictures just yet but hopefully in a few weeks I'll be able to put up a few behind the scenes shots. I'm so blessed by how much I got to learn and experience, and of course all of the amazing new friendships and contacts! Getting paid is pretty nice too ;)

Now to catch up on schoolwork... EEK.

Did a fashion quickie with Jennifer Strauss in the studio today, my first real attempt at styling a proper fashion shoot and I'm pretty happy with how they came out. Definitely getting the hang of fashion photography is going to be much harder work than I anticipated but I'm slowly becoming drawn into it.

A Hawaiian Film Love Affair

So, I was in Oahu (paradise) all of last week and shot three rolls of film on my new boyfriend the Leica R9, I got my first roll back today and nearly screamed from a rush of photo ecstasy. I only had time to scan half the roll, but here it is... COMPLETELY UNEDITED. Can I just say one more time how wild I am about film!?

This little UK lovely is singer Eleanor Jackson of the synth-pop band "La Roux", I stumbled upon her music video while on the plane home from Hawaii and watched it at least five times! The strong 80's influence in her music is catchy and brilliantly used, and as a person she seems so incredibly interesting! Definitely a girl I'd love to meet/photograph.

Ray Traces

So I've been putting off posting my classwork since none of its due until the end of the class, but my portfolio was due yesterday so I'm gonna start putting it up here! Also, relaunch of my website should be ready by tomorrow, lots of new photos and edits will be going up there too.

Ray traces are created by hanging a small flashlight from a tall ceiling, pointing your camera straight up and swinging the light like a pendulum while doing a long exposure. These traces were anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. I played around with color and blending in photoshop and really like how mine came out.

Here's some 35mm goodness I shot a few weeks ago when Ash and I went to LA to see a special screening at the Arclight of Oddsac, which is a visual collaboration between Animal Collective (music) and Danny Perez (visuals/director). We dropped by Lane's place before meeting up with our friend Bridger and some awesome ladies from school. It was such a fun night! Oddsac is AMAZING by the way, it completely blew my mind and was so inspiring! Youtube it immediately to see the trailer!! It's set to be released on DVD and iTunes June 29th.

U P D A T E

2010 is blowing my mind.

I've never really put much stock in the belief that a new year triggers a real change in your life, I mean is there really a difference between December 31st and January 1st? But there's something about this year... I can definitely say the days have been the best I've ever had, and the good times show no sign of stopping.

Life is seriously SO GOOD.

I hate to go spewing sunshine and rainbows on everyone but I simply can't get over how great things have been! New friends, new experiences, new opportunities, I feel like I'm living to the fullest for the first time.

Two recent events of note:

I got THE internship. The exact one I wanted, my number one choice! With insanely successful commercial/celebrity photographer Peggy Sirota! I'm in the office Monday/Wednesday, today was my second day and already I've learned so much. I feel SO inspired by her, she is basically everything I want to be. She has 5 kids, a hugely successful career and is her own boss. I want to be her 15 years from now.

Also, attended an AMAZING event at the Santa Barbara Film Festival this past weekend,I went to a screening of "Posse", a 1975 western film which was followed by a Q&A with THE Quentin Tarantino and the director/star of "Posse" Kirk Douglas, who is 93! It was incredible.

My dear dear friend Zack is a stud (obviously) and is thinking of doing some modeling while in school so he and his family hired me to do some head shots! We had so much fun, and I don't work with guys often so it was fun for me.

The class i'm in right now concentrates on learning the basics of motion picture and video, and for this class you do most of the assignments in groups. My MPV group went to Vegas this last weekend to shoot our first assignment! it was my first time seeing it all and we had so much fun! Stay tuned for our videos, we're gonna have some amazing stuff coming out this session :)

Winter Break Goals:

1. Shoot at least 100 frames per day.

2. Drive to Portland to buy a Macbook Pro (tax free!) if I don't get one for Christmas.

3. Spend an entire day exploring at least three different cities on foot. (I'm thinking Tacoma, Portland and Port Orchard)

4. Come up with a concept for a complete series to do for myself, no school application whatsoever.

5. Tour two successful local photography studios in the Seattle area.

6. Learn something new about each member of my family.

7. Completely cleanse my body of coffee and alcohol.

8. Rediscover the person I'd like to be. Mentally, physically and spiritually.

This darling couple booked me to shoot a couple's session of them, we did these in Santa Monica and I love how they came out. And I love Laura and Joe of course!! We had so much fun and I miss them already :)

My favorites are the last two, the reflection on the sand and the colors of the sunset were so beautiful!

I'm so in love with museums!! I try and visit a museum at least once a month, and with all the amazing options near by like the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Getty and the LACMA i'm in heaven. Here are a few pieces I found inspirational in my recent museum ventures...

Francois-Joseph Navez, "The Massacre of the Innocents" viewed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC

"Springtime" and "The Storm", both by Pierre-Auguste Cot. Also seen at the Met, absolutely breathtaking in real life. The paintings are huge, probably 6 feet tall maybe even more and the light and color and emotion all amaze me!

This is Alberto Giacometti among his work, I viewed a few of his sculptures at the LACMA a few weeks ago and they are so amazing and haunting in person, it re-taught me the power of simplicity.

I can't really explain why, but i'm really drawn to art like this as well. A friend and I were trying to figure out the appeal when i saw this at LACMA and couldn't look away..
